The Metamorphic Metaphor
Imago Leadership is named after the “imago”—the final stage of an insect’s transformation. My late father, was a renowned entomologist and lepidopterist (insects and specifically, butterflies.) He spent his life studying these moments of change.
Growing up around that work, I came to see transformation not as an event, but as a process—structured, necessary and ongoing.
Today, that same idea underpins my work with organisations. The Imago Metamorphic System (IMS) reflects a simple truth: as conditions and contexts shift, leadership postures must also flex and adapt—deliberately, not accidentally.

Imago Metamorphic System (IMS)
/ɪˈmɑːɡoʊ ˌmɛtəˈmɔːrfɪk ˈsɪstəm/
noun
A leadership methodology that enables organisations to continuously adapt and evolve how leadership is enacted in response to multiple and shifting contexts.
IMS integrates strategy, governance, culture and execution, equipping leaders to flex behaviours, ways of working and culture design as conditions change.
Origin: Conceived in 2020 and curated into a proprietary methodology in 2026 within Imago Leadership.
Usage: “The executive team used IMS to realign their leadership approach during a period of strategic inflection.”

Three Imago Architectures - One Leadership System
Leadership does not sit in a single group—it operates across a system of three architectures.
The Executive Architecture delivers strategy and performance.
The Board Architecture governs, stewards and sets direction.
The Integrating Architecture (often-overlooked,) determines how effectively the two work together.
When integration is weak, even strong leadership becomes sub-optimal.
IMS strengthens all three architectures—and critically, the connections between them—so leadership cohorts can operate as one, coherent, evolving system.

Extending the Leadership Range and Repertoire
Many clients tell us, parts of the IMS experience feels familiar in the best sense.
De Bono's Six Thinking Hats broadened how teams think.
Situational Leadership refined how leaders respond to individuals.
Both shifted leadership from fixed to flexible.
IMS extends this further—embedding that flexibility into an evolving, integrated leadership system that responds dynamically to changing organisational contexts.

Diagnose your context. Decide your posture. Organise for impact.
Effective leadership for Boards and Executives, starts with seeing clearly—understanding the conditions you are truly operating in
From there, leadership becomes a deliberate choice: selecting the postures that best matches the contexts. But insight and intent are not enough.
Impact comes from organisation—aligning behaviours, ways of working, rituals and cultural signals so the system reinforces the shift.
The leadership system moves from intention to execution, and on to performance.
"I’ve had emphatic feedback and appreciation for your work on leading us through the day. Brilliant effort and exactly what we were hoping for when we first discussed the concept. It was a fantastic day and I’m sure it will inspire us to greater heights than we thought possible."
